of arts and society analyzing the elements of narrative,
documentary film, television and examines the role of Hollywood,
international, and independent cinema in reflecting, shaping,
and critiquing society.
SOCY 2163 - Sociology of Gender

Act like a lady. Be a man. Ubiquitous statements like these are
just part of the gender socialization process. This course will
use sociological perspectives to examine how society creates
women out of girls (and men out of boys), and the ways that
gender influences expectations and opportunities in cultures
across the globe. We will also explore the everyday experiences
of being gendered individuals, and the efforts of social
movements to achieve gender equality.
