The English
Department’s summer
offerings include a range of courses in
literature, film, and writing. Courses in British and American
Literature survey the full scope of national literature,
while other courses introduce such fields as Film and Adolescent
Literature. Technical Writing offers students an introduction
to that field, while Creative Writing courses engage students’ creative
abilities for story-making.
So
whether you’re looking
for introductory or graduate courses, literature or writing,
canonical texts or popular culture, chances are the English
Department has a course suited just for you.

Gettin’ Graphic ~
The Graphic Novel, Text & Beyond
Summer Session I
Brown

We
are not talking about comic books.
We certainly are not talking about “funny books.”
We are talking about the most graphic
literature and writing class of the Summer!
We’ll be using touchstones of the most misunderstood literature
and arts genre of the modern age, the Graphic Novel. How can one
text intelligently combine the best of visual arts and creative
narrative? To answer this question, expect surprises, amazing
stories, award-winning artw orks, and startlingly real tales.
Although we’ll concentrate on the graphic novel itself as textual model, also
included will be film translations of some of Graphic-dom’s
major creations. Analysis of written and visual rhetoric
elements will lead us into critical insights of so-called “funny
books,” and some of pop culture’s enduring archetypal symbols.
Selected works to include...
*Watchmen
*Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
*V: FOR VENDETTA
.... with contextual discussions of MAUS, From Hell, Our Year of
Cancer, Hellboy, Cerebus, Fables, and more.
~ An R. Andrew Brown spectacular! ~
