Aspire! is a week-long residential program for rising 11th - 12th graders* who want a "sneak preview" of college life.  This year, we have 6 academic strands - Law, Motorsports Engineering, Health, IT, Musical Theater and Engineering: Computer Aided Design.  During the day, you work with your own group; evening activities include advice from the Admissions office about your college application; meeting with a representative of the College Foundation of North Carolina, for an informational session covering college applications, career advice, scholarship opportunities, etc.; and meetings with students and faculty from departments of interest to you.  Of course, there's also swimming, and other recreational activities, and the usual (in)famous Talent Show!

* Health also accept students in rising grade 10.

Aspire! program descriptions:

There are 6 Aspire! topics, but some of the spaces are reserved.  Thus, when you register for Aspire! it's a good idea to let us know your second and third choices too.  If there's space available in the program of your choice, of course we'll register you for that one, but we may not be able to do it right away.

For on-line registration, please click on the big check mark    to the left of the title of the program
you wish to  register for.

IT (with Tiffany Barnes and Bruce Long)   July 19 - 23

Is it a battle with evil aliens? Or a quest to solve crime?  In this new, high-tech IT camp in collaboration with Tiffany Barnes from Computer Science and Bruce Long from Software and Information Systems, learn how computing plays a leading role in making games and in predicting and detecting evil-doers in software! Each day you will spend half the day learning to make new games of your own design, and half your day working to solve a virtual "crime" by finding electronic evidence left behind when computers or other digital devices are used.

After this camp, you’ll be able to make your own games to play with your friends, and know how a digital CSI operates!

Musical Theater: I'm Gonna Make It! (with Tiffany McAfee)   July 26 - 30
You and your friends have always been there for each other. You want the same thing in life: to make it to the big time and be famous. But you have different ideas of what fame can be: from Broadway and Musicals to Movies and Hollywood. It’s time to say farewell to your friends as you take different paths, but you can make it your own way. Students will be challenged in Aspire! Musical Theatre like never before. Be prepared to follow your dreams to being a star, audition for the leads roles and solos. There won’t be any lyrics in these songs, so be ready to sing your hearts out and really use those vocal cords! That’s what friends are for, right?
There's a time for us,
some day a time for us,
time together with time to spare,
time to look, time to care,
Someday! Somewhere.”West Side Story

Computer-Aided Design (with Jeff Raquet)   August 2 - 6
Computer-Aided Design (CAD) is a vital new tool with applications from automotive and aerospace industries to prosthetics.  It’s also used to produce computer animation for special effects in movies, advertising and technical manuals.  Dr. Jeff Raquet works in our Rapid Lab where students use CAD software to generate complex working models to meet design specifications for their projects. Students will be working hands-on to create models of their own, and will then use Additive Manufacturing to generate actual, physical models of their designs.

Fees and Registration
  • The registration process has changed and now goes through our Continuing Education department.  It will speed things up for you if you fill out a "profile" for each student before registration.  Click on this link and follow the directions there.  If you have any problems, call the registration specialists at 704-687-8900.
  • The deposit is $70.  You may choose to pay just the deposit immediately; your space will be held until 10 days before the start of the program.  The balance of $375 will be due then.  If we don't hear from you then, we will have to fill the space from our (usually very long!) waiting lists.  Full payment is $445.

  • When programs are full, we can put you on a waiting list.  We occasionally get drops, so sometimes a space opens up in a "full" program; if you need to cancel, please let us know in good time, so we can offer the space to another student.  Please make sure we have up-to-date contact information for you.
